Dallas-based Trammell Crow Co. is positioning its Charlotte office for growth in multifamily development. The global commercial real estate development company earlier this month hired Tom Burr as senior vice president. Burr will be responsible for multifamily development opportunities here for the company's subsidiary, High Street Residential.

Burr previously worked for Flournoy Development Group where he was the lead developer on more than 2,700 multifamily units throughout the Carolinas and Virginia that totaled more than $800 million.

Trammell Crow announced in September that it was opening a Charlotte office to focus on industrial, multifamily and mixed-use development in the region. The move came after the company re-established a North Carolina presence in 2021 with the opening of an office in Raleigh.

Josh Dix, principal at Trammell Crow, who also leads HSR's multifamily business in the Raleigh office, said bringing Burr into Charlotte will allow the multifamily team to "cover even more ground" and find the best development opportunities in two of the country's fastest-growing markets.

Ben Schon, a senior vice president for Trammell Crow, is leading the industrial development team in Charlotte.

Between 1974 and 2013, the company's portfolio included nearly 7 million square feet of space across 67 projects in North Carolina. That included Truist Center in uptown, the former Hearst Tower. Since re-entering the North Carolina market, Trammell Crow has unveiled a major industrial project in the Charlotte region — the Metro63 Logistics Center, a nearly 756,000-square-foot building in Kannapolis.

Charlotte Business Journal reported in March that the company is working with the Dowd family on the Charlotte Pipe & Foundry site near uptown for a multi-phase redevelopment project. The site — called the Iron District — could accommodate as much as 7.75 million square feet of office, multifamily, retail and hotel uses.

Trammell Crow has offices in 26 major cities throughout the United States and Europe. It has developed or acquired nearly 2,900 buildings valued at $75 billion and over 655 million square feet since it was founded in 1948.
