CHARLOTTE, N.C. — According to the Pew Research Center, 14% of employed adults are working from home. That means they are not using their cars as much.

One WCNC Charlotte viewer emailed the newsroom stating he only drives about 5,000 miles per year, and wanted to know if he could save money because of his low mileage.

According to the latest data from the Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, people drive on average around 13,476 miles a year.

NerdWallet broke down four types of car insurance that allow drivers to pay per mile. Nationwide SmartMiles is one of them; it tracks your miles from a device that's installed in your vehicle.

NerdWallet states if you drive less than 8,000 miles, it's worth it. The only problem is it isn't offered in North Carolina, and is only available in selective states.

WalletHub also said pay-per-mile coverage is not offered in North Carolina. But many insurance companies in North Carolina do offer drivers low mileage discounts and usage-based insurance, which tracks your driving habits and gives discounts for safe driving.
