Lake Wylie group pulls support for Charlotte’s plan to move water out of Catawba

Charlotte Water started trying to change its agreement regulating how much water it can take from one river basin to another in 2024. The Lake Wylie Marine Commission, which oversees health and safety concerns on Lake Wyleie, has withdrawn its support for Charlotte Water's plan to move more water out of the Catawba River. The decision was made by the group's leadership during its annual report to Mecklenburg County commissioners. Currently, Charlotte Water is allowed to transfer up to 33 million gallons of water per day from the CatAWba River basin to the Rocky River basin, some of which is eventually discharged into the Rocky. The commission's executive director, Ray Webber, stated that new modeling data indicated that what they thought was 40 years in the future is now on them. The Real Estate and Building Industry Coalition remains supportive of Charlotte Water’s request.
