The City of Charlotte is working on a new 10-and-half year lease for the airport, with the potential cost of $2.1 billion in airport upgrades, which would include new gates and a tunnel. Airport workers are hoping for workplace protections included in the agreement. Catherine Poneros, co-director of organizing for Local SEIU 32BJ, works for the union representing airport workers who work on jobs such as escort wheelchair passengers and clean planes and bathrooms. Union members want better working conditions and higher pay. Some council members are reluctant to make demands of the airlines for fear the state might try to take over the airport. The lease is expected to be voted on by City Council on November 9th.
