Local nonprofit, Tree Charlotte, plans to plant and distribute approximately 6,500 trees annually.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The city of Charlotte launched a new tool designed to keep the Queen City's tree canopy thriving.

CANOPY is a platform designed to explore, plan and enrich Charlotte's tree canopy. The app will help people see the recent tree canopy in their area with customizable filters.

"This application highlights our commitment to keeping our community informed and engaged in nurturing and preserving our vibrant tree canopy," Alyson Craig, Charlotte's planning director, said in a news release. "We understand the importance of transparent and accessible information, and we aim to empower residents with an intuitive tool to stay updated on tree canopy data and opportunities in their neighborhoods."

Right now, only about 47% of Charlotte's land is covered by trees. City leaders say they'd like to get that number back up to 50%. Tree Charlotte, a local nonprofit, plans to plant and distribute approximately 6,500 trees annually.
