Union County residents hear proposals for major road widening projects

Designs of the projects were on display with several staff members explaining the proposals to community members. The North Carolina Department of Transportation is planning two road improvement projects in Union County near Waxhaw. The existing portion of Weddington Road (also known as N.C. 84) will be widened from two lanes to four, and the extension of Rea Road east from where it ends at Providence Road to meet up with Weddinton Road. The project also includes new intersections that will eliminate dangerous left turns, new traffic signals and new sidewalks. Construction on the Rea Rd extension is set to begin in Fall 2027, while the rest of the widening on N.c. 84 is scheduled to start in Summer 2030. All public comments and questions must be submitted by November 23.
