Serial rapist connected to NC cold cases gets life in prison
A serial rapist connected to multiple cold cases in Charlotte was sentenced to life in prison on Monday, the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday. LJ Bertha, a serial rapist connected to multiple cold cases in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been sentenced to life in prison. Bertha was convicted of first-degree rape, second-degree robbery, and common law robbery. He will serve consecutive sentences without parole. The crimes occurred in 1993 and 1994 respectively. Both victims, who were found near the suspect, testified during the case. Berthal had previously been convicted of the 1996 assault in 1997 and sentenced to 20 years in prison for it.

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A serial rapist connected to multiple cold cases in Charlotte was sentenced to life in prison on Monday, the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday.
A jury found LJ Bertha, 64, guilty of first-degree rape, second-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping, and common law robbery. Bertha was sentenced on Monday to life in prison serving consecutive sentences without the possibility of parole.
Court documents stated that back in October of 1993 a woman was parked at a shopping center off Freedom Drive when Bertha kicked in the driver’s side window and forced her to move over and let him drive before sexually assaulting her and threatening to kill her.
The victim was located nearby by police and serological testing was later conducted. In 2023, Bertha was confirmed as the suspect.
Court docs also stated that in 1994 a woman was walking on Beatties Ford Road when Bertha approached her and sexually assaulted her while armed with a box cutter. Serological testing was later conducted and Bertha was confirmed as the suspect in 2023.
Both victims as well as a third victim who was assaulted in 1996 testified during the case. Bertha had previously been convicted of the ’96 assault in 1997 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
