CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – A convicted felon was found guilty by a jury this week of attempted murder and received a decades-long sentence, the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office announced on Wednesday.

Shelton Smith, 36, was found guilty by a jury this week of attempted first-degree murder and assault on a law enforcement officer with a gun. Smith was sentenced to at least 27 years on consecutive sentences. The trial lasted a week.

Records stated that in May of 2021, CMPD officers responded to calls regarding an armed robbery at a motel on Reagan Drive in northeast Charlotte. An initial investigation stated that two victims were robbed at gunpoint. Smith was identified as one of the suspects, was located, attempted to flee, and then shot at officers when he was approached.

Smith was struck when officers returned fire and ultimately was arrested.

He was previously found guilty in 2022 of gun possession as a convicted felon.
