Mecklenburg’s lone GOP House seat at risk as Democrats oust moderates
After winning by just 213 votes in 2024, Rep. Tricia Cotham faces Democrat Ken McCool in a district rated a toss-up. Mecklenburg County's legislative delegation could see a significant shake-up, with Republicans defending their only state House seat in the county, Rep. Tricia Cotham, seeking another term representing House District 105, and two other districts on the November ballot. Democrats are replacing two incumbents who broke with their party, Reps. Carla Cunningham and Nasif Majeed, who helped Republicans override Gov. Josh Stein’s vetoes, and subsequently became unaffiliated. The current 13-member state House delegation includes 10 Democrats, one Republican, and one unaffiliated member. Cothm's victory in 2024 came after she switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party in 2023, giving Republicans a veto-proof majority in the House. The John Locke Foundation's 2026 Civitas Partisan Index (CPI) rates District 105 as R+0, placing it in the toss-up category.
