Neighbor wishes deputies did not shoot to kill
PORT CHARLOTTE — Pete Varney, a neighbor of a man shot and killed by Charlotte County deputies Wednesday night, said he wishes the officers didn't shoot to kill. Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell stated that a situation between neighbors escalated after a neighbor threatened to kill another neighbor with a firearm, prompting police to respond to the threat. The suspect was shot and killed by two deputies at his home in Port Charlotte, with a machete and a gun. The neighbor, Pete Varney, expressed concern that the deputies who shot the man may suffer from mental health issues down the line, contributing to a cycle of violence. Prummew stated that the suspect was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The shooting is still an ongoing investigation.
