CHESTER, S.C. (WBTV) - A family dealing with unimaginable pain after a sixteen-year-old was killed while at a neighborhood park in Chester, South Carolina.

Police aren’t releasing many details on what happened but do say an arrest has been made in part thanks to newly installed technology.

“He said Donovan just got killed.”

Words no parent ever wants to hear. Donald Browning is the head of a family that has more questions than answers. A family is dealing with the tragic loss of a brother, a son, and the youngest among them.

“I still don’t believe it. I still don’t believe it.” Browning said.

It was an act of seemingly senseless violence. But the details of exactly what happened remain out of reach for those most affected.

“He called me and told me…he called me and told me my brother was dead.” the victim’s brother Justin McClurkin told WBTV’s Ron Lee.

Sixteen-year-old Donovan McClurkin, according to Chester Police, was at a county park on Wednesday when he fell victim to a violent act. He didn’t survive his injuries. The chief of police says thanks in part to newly installed technology around the area, including shot-spotters and flock camera systems, warrants were quickly drawn up, and an arrest was made. In custody is 18-year-old Connie Di’ Rose Miller. She’s been charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime and murder.

But why this happened eludes the family.

“It’s a tragic situation that never should have happened.”

Jordan McClurkin is Donovan’s brother; he’s also in law enforcement. To him, the gravity of the situation hasn’t truly hit him yet.

“I’m still in shock and disbelief that my actual brother is gone…and that I’ll never see him again,” McClurkin said. “I can’t sleep.”

Brown, who spent some time walking the grounds of the park with his sons, paused only at the point where his youngest died. He says it’s almost become holy ground for him.

“Walking over to that spot where he passed, you get a feeling from there. You know, you feel something come from that spot,” Brown explained.

Justin, a Rock Hill police officer, says the laws need to be changed so that no other family suffers like his.

Chester police tell us they also seized a large amount of marijuana and cash during the search, emphasizing the gravity of the arrest.
